Cold Turkey Quitting and A Must-Read Book

Hey there,

I'm coming in hot and heavy with recommendations this week, including the first fiction book that I might say changed my life.

Looking Back

At the start of this year, I stopped using social media cold turkey.

I’ve checked my Instagram messages a time or two, and my wife shows me some memes, but otherwise I’m not scrolling on Facebook, Instagram, or X.

I know this won’t shock anyone, but I don’t miss it. Not even a little bit.

My screen time has fallen off a cliff and I’m way more focused and present.

I’m an all-or-nothing person, so just giving it all up has made it easier to not get drawn back in.

Is there anything in your life that you need to just cut out entirely? And what if you just gave it up fully, starting tomorrow?

Looking Up

I’ve been reading through the Bible every year for the last decade and a half using the M’Cheyne reading plan. I love this plan because it takes you through four chapters from different books of the Bible each day so even if one chapter is a genealogy or census, there are other chapters that likely contain narrative or Psalms. For the last year, I’ve been doing my daily Bible reading with Logos Bible Software.

I wrote a review of Logos, and it’s helped unlock some major insights from the Bible. Like any powerful software, there’s a learning curve, but it’s worth taking the time to understand how it works because it has helped me mine the Bible for insight that wouldn’t be possible without digital tools.

I go into the good, the bad, and the ugly in the full post, but here’s a little snippet:

If you’re considering Logos Bible Software, you’re probably an avid Bible reader, a growing Christian, a seminary student, a pastor, a ministry leader or some combination of all of those. You want to seriously study the Bible, take notes, refer to books and commentaries, prepare sermons, and do all of that in one place. If that’s you, Logos is absolutely worthy of your consideration and investment.
If you want to just read the Bible without additional tools, options, or original language access, Logos will feel like overkill.
I’ve been a Logos Bible user for a number of years, but I wasn’t using it to its full potential. I’ve finally found my groove and now I’m studying the Bible in ways I couldn’t with physical resources alone.
I hope this review is uniquely helpful as I share the specifics of how I use Logos, call out the best way to start with Logos, and note the software’s limitations. The best tool is one that is a joy to use and gets the job done. Logos has become that for me through trial and error and using the software as it is designed to work.

If you’ve been considering a digital theological tool or library, Logos is worth your consideration, and you can use my affiliate link for a 60-day trial and the coupon code SAVEMORE right now for 10% off your next order of $75+, 15% off $150+, 20% off $350+ until February 10. It’s a great time to kick the tires and see if it is for you.

Looking Forward

I’m looking forward to living more like Theo from Theo of Golden. It instantly became my favorite novel of all time, and I’ve read my fair share of fiction.

I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll just leave you with my Goodreads review:

What’s one more line added to the chorus of praise this book has already deservedly received?
I don’t know that I’d ever had a feeling I’d love a book so much within the first 30 or so pages, but I did with Theo of Golden.
I don’t think I’ve ever wept at the beauty of a book when it ended, but I did with Theo of Golden.
I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to so emulate a person from a piece of fiction, but I did with Theo of Golden.
A gift to all who read it and an inspiration for us all to live more like Theo of Golden.

Buy this book. It’s the most must-read fiction book I’ve ever picked up. If you can’t afford to buy it, get it from your library. Or borrow money from a friend. Or email me and ask me to buy it for you. Just read it. I promise you won’t regret it.

If you’ve read it already, please reply and tell me why it’s your new favorite book too.

Looking For a Laugh

You'll appreciate this meme even more once you read Theo of Golden. But it's true either way.

Wrapping Up

Are you going to quit something (like social media), start something, or read Theo of Golden this week? As many gold stars as you can handle if you do all three.

Here's to less social media, deeper Bible study, and more living like Theo,
